• Early work bright and colorful
• Abstract
• Interesting transition to black paintings through collage
• White painting
• Black paintings
• Late work is minimalist
At first glance his early work looks totally different from his later work but at a second look, they are all very similar. His early work is more colorful and has more going on, whereas his later work is minimalist and has subtle variations in dark color. His transition from colorful abstract work (Late 30’s) to black paintings (Mid 60s) is some very interesting collage work that is very appealing. It’s apparent that he kept his style but became more and more minimalist and was really playing with color in his later work. I really like his body of work and I am interested to learn more about this artist. He seems very awesome.

John Zurier – Night

• Colors blue (light and dark), white, pink-red, greenish-gray
• Rectangular shape (all the same)
• Some are dark feeling and some are lighter
• White patches
• Stark scrapes in paint
I love these pieces because they are about painting. I love the dark color of blue – it fascinates me because I have never explored it before. The patches of white feel like empty spaces and they are playing with the idea of being imperfect, incomplete, or flawed. The honesty of these pieces is astounding because when I think of painting, I think of blending colors and using certain paint brushes and a very conservative method. I love painters that are so raw and this collection is just so exquisite.
The scraping in the paint is also very interesting. At first glance, I didn’t particularly like the scrapes (I didn’t hate them either) and the more I look at them, the more I love them. They are so blunt and I’m curious about Zurier’s process of these pieces. On the side of each piece is a white or warm blue line and I love it for some reason. I don’t know why but it feels like the line shapes the composition to be quirked or something. It makes it imperfect and kind of sad. I really love Night #5 because it looks very dark and sophisticated, the white patches are a warmer gray than other pieces and the horizontal strokes are almost a dark green color – making this piece warmer than the rest. As a whole, ‘Night’ is a fantastic investigation of painting without a specific purpose and of the process of painting. I really relate to these pieces, even though they are very different from my own work.

-blue, black, white, and hints of pink/red
-scratch marks
-figures
-city
-haptic mark making
-compositionally balanced
This piece is nice because it doesn’t look like a certain style to me. It feels real and I can tell that it has a lot of meaning and maybe personal meaning. The figures look like tribal people and there are arrows flying around. I don’t understand the meaning of this piece but I love to look at it because the colors and figures are very bold and definite. This is beautiful to me. I see elements of family and home and nurturing with the babies and the homes or city parts of this piece. Maybe this is about Westernization and how the colonists enslaved and murdered the people living on the land before we came to America. I relate this to the novel Invisible Man and black/general racial oppression in America.

-blue and orange colors
-white and black hues
-crazy marks
-childish feel
-unrecognizable figures/people (?)
-indistinguishable text
The colors used in this piece are really interesting and feel very light and childish but there is definitely some dark lurking behind all of the happy things. I like how this is a painting of something but it is indecipherable what exactly that something is. The text at the top of the piece is nice because it adds an element of intrigue; I desire to read and understand it but I can barely read it.
I like the figure near the top right corner that looks like it is wearing lipstick because it looks really weird and messed up. I also think this piece is exploring the social boundaries of sexes. The top-right figure that is wearing make-up has pink paint on it and the bottom right figure is wearing blue. Maybe this says something about how I read colors and categorize them as a certain sex.
I like this piece after looking at it for a while. It is interesting and stimulating to read into.

-haptic marks
-awesome pale shades of purple, blue, orange and black
-compositionally balanced
-movement/evidence of emotion
-spots of black
I love the feeling of this piece and how the little black spots are almost like holes in the piece. The use of color is also very interesting and exciting because orange is a very vivid color and it is being covered by the pale, almost gray purple. Gray is a melancholy color and the holes of black showing through create an eerily sad painting. There are also a few specks of white throughout, maybe symbolizing unknown things in the world. Overall, this piece is exciting and very stimulating to look at and I enjoy it very much.

Portfolio Day Reflection
My past two experiences of portfolio day prepared me to expect to wait in lines for hours, get a headache from the fluorescent lights (and my nervous thoughts), and receive harsh criticisms from school representatives. I brought my best and newest work but I was feeling uneasy as I arrived at the convention center. I was not feeling confident or verbally prepared to show myself and elaborate on how my art is conceptual. I only met with one representative that day from School of Art Institute of Chicago after waiting in line anxiously for under an hour. I walked up to the table and the rep was already in a bad mood. I suggested laying my art out on the floor behind the tables because I thought it would be easier to see and understand if the pieces were together.
He was asking me who my favorite artist was and I didn’t know. (I feel weird and sometimes wrong for not knowing that many artists. I never really cared and I’m young, I don’t know anything! Is this bad?). In the end after much intimidation and me staggering to explain my art and my beliefs the SAIC rep accepted my portfolio but said my stuff was very incomplete and I should show more range and more observation drawings – less abstract and minimal pieces. I have mixed feelings. I feel like I won’t be supported very often in my art making after leaving Mr. Miller’s class. Nervous and hesitant to study art in school.

-Black
-dripping
-white blurry marks
-subtle differences in black shade colors
-texture
I love the way the subtleties of the piece are the focus. It is so awesome because it is easy to miss and takes a lot of time to notice and enjoy. The texture of each piece is phenomenal because it is all one color but still very prominent. Piece number 9 has great grey tones at the bottom that remind me of buildings in an urban setting. I thoroughly enjoy this collection.
